The flight of birds; the flapping cycle of the pigeon.

چکیده
For many years there has been discussion on the details of the wing movements of birds in flight, and many attempts have been made to produce clear cinematograph records of the flapping cycle. Until recently no photographic system has combined a sufficiently short exposure with a rapid repetition rate and a reasonably large field of view. The development of the Arditron discharge tube has provided a light source which is of very high intensity, and has a flash duration of about 1 /xsec. This lamp, though designed for single-flash operation, has been found very suitable for highspeed cinematography. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cinematographic technique which has been developed, and to give a preliminary account of some of the information which has been obtained on the slow flight of the pigeon.

Forward flight of birds revisited. Part 2: short-term dynamic stability and trim
Thrust generation by flapping is accompanied by alternating pitching moment. On the down-stroke, it pitches the bird down when the wings are above its centre of gravity and up when they are below; on the up-stroke, the directions reverse. Because the thrust depends not only on the flapping characteristics but also on the angle of attack of the bird's body, interaction between the flapping and b...
متن کاملMolecular survey of avian circoviruses in some non-psittacine birds and detection of a novel canary circovirus in a pigeon
Background: Circoviruses are small, non-enveloped, single stranded DNA viruses. There is scarce information about these agents in non-psittacine birds. Aims: It is attempted to detect and characterize circoviruses in non-psittacine birds. Methods: Forty-five samples were collected from different non-psittacine species belonging to seven avian o...
متن کاملLoading Estimation of Flapping Wings under Aeroelastic Effect Using Finite Element Method
The aim of this paper is to provide an aeroelastic computational tool which determines the induced wing loads during flapping flight. For this purpose, a Finite Element (FE) code based on a four-node plate bending element formulation is developed to simulate the aeroelastic behavior of flapping wings in low incompressible flow. A quasi-steady aerodynamic model is incorporated into the aeroelast...
متن کاملScapular orientation in theropods and basal birds, and the origin of flapping flight
Basal birds such as Archaeopteryx and Confuciusornis are typically portrayed as flapping fliers. However, here I show that shoulder joint orientation in these animals prevented elevation of the humerus above the dorsum, thereby preventing use of the recovery stroke, an important part of flapping flight. In members of the clade Ornithothoraces, which includes extant birds and the extinct avian c...
متن کاملFlight Modes in Migrating European Bee-Eaters: Heart Rate May Indicate Low Metabolic Rate during Soaring and Gliding
BACKGROUND Many avian species soar and glide over land. Evidence from large birds (m(b)>0.9 kg) suggests that soaring-gliding is considerably cheaper in terms of energy than flapping flight, and costs about two to three times the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Yet, soaring-gliding is considered unfavorable for small birds because migration speed in small birds during soaring-gliding is believed to...
